History Set In Concrete...

These dramatic ruins are all that's left of the old Cement and Limeworks built and operated from the 1860's on the banks of the Mahurangi River, near the lovely little town of Warkworth.
Now a Historic Site, it is undergoing preservation to retain the unique character of the once thriving cement works.
It is the nearest thing New Zealand has to the old castle ruins in Europe.
Today, the ruins provide a backdrop to weddings and are sometimes seen used in feature films.
A lake on the property that just 'happened' to appear one day a long time ago is a favourite swimming place.
I was lucky enough to live in my Junk rigged yacht 'Shoestring' on the marina situated next to this wonderful place for a couple of years.
But that's another story...
